When there are several different words for the same thing and it can be confusing, what is that called?

I'm looking for a word to describe this. It's not synonyms. I'm trying to describe how for this one disease, doctors use various terms that mean the same thing. I wanted to say there is a plurality of terms, but that's not right. What's the word I'm looking for?
